June Luncheon: Pitching Columbus: How Local Professionals are Making a National Impact

With recent articles in The Washington Post and USA Today, Columbus is quickly becoming a nationally-recognized destination, but how does a city get stories placed in national publications? The panel will discuss the process of hosting FAMs, site visits and showcasing this city’s strong business and economic development and vibrant food, arts and cultural scene to change the national perception of our city.
Megumi Robinson is the associate director of public relations at Experience Columbus, the city’s destination marketing organization. She oversees media relations which range from local to national to industry publications and travel and leisure. You will often find her out and about the city trying new restaurants, exploring neighborhoods and meeting new people. She resides with her husband and puppy in Merion Village. Robin Davis is the director of media relations for Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. She handles all media requests, as well as pitching stories to local and national media outlets. She also coordinates with chief communications officers in other city departments on all media requests for the City of Columbus. Prior to joining Mayor Ginther’s staff, Robin worked as the food editor at the Columbus Dispatch and hosted cooking segments and specials on WBNS-TV. Before coming to Columbus, Robin was a restaurant critic and food writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. She came to San Francisco by way of Los Angeles, where she worked as an assistant editor at Bon Appetit magazine.
Marty McDonald leads the integrated tourism and economic development practice for Fahlgren Mortine – one of the nation’s top tourism firms. In her role, she works with a growing list of destination clients nationwide, including five states and many U.S. cities, to help shape and tell their stories to potential visitors. Specific Fahlgren Mortine clients include COSI, TourismOhio, Dublin CVB, Columbus 2020, Experience Columbus, MORPC, Columbus Regional Airport Authority and many others. Throughout her career, Marty has led communications efforts for various development organizations, tourism attractions, restaurants and entertainment venues, and is a frequent speaker at tourism conferences and events. She is a national tourism section member of the Public Relations Society of America and served on the national conference host committee for Columbus.
